2024 State Award Winners

The winners from the 2024 Annual State Awards are listed below along with their nomination narrative.

Backstage Award

Geraldine Tobola, Edna, TX

If it was JUST that Geraldine was a gifted performer, THAT would be enough. However, her talents seem to know no bounds. She seems to always have a questioning look on her face that says, “Ok. What can I do next?” Whatever the next task may be, there is never a doubt that it will be executed with care and precision. If it was JUST that she was a brilliant costume designer, THAT would be enough. As a costume designer and maker, she has turned many a pauper into a prince; and vice versa depending on the show. Her eye for detail is remarkable and unequaled. Her designs have graced stages throughout the “Crossroads” and never fail to impress. If it was JUST that she is willing to learn whatever it takes to solve a problem or help make the theatre better, THAT would be enough. Geraldine learned the ins and outs of repairing stage draperies so that she could repair torn curtains at the Welder Center. Her efforts have saved the theatre thousands of dollars in repairs while helping to ensure a safe environment for performers and crew. She did this simply because she was asked. If it was JUST these things, THAT would be enough. However, what sets Geraldine apart is that she does all these things with passion for the theatre in her heart and a smile on her face. Every theatre company that Geraldine works for becomes instantly aware that when she walks through door, they are a better for it.

Lisa Flake, Lubbock, TX

Lisa Flake’s journey with the Lubbock Community Theatre isn’t just about volunteering; it’s a testament to the profound impact one person can have on an entire community. It began with her granddaughter’s enrollment in our Stages Academy, but it blossomed into something far greater—a legacy of selflessness and unwavering dedication. From the moment Lisa stepped through our doors, her presence became synonymous with reliability and compassion. She doesn’t shy away from the tough tasks; instead, she embraces them with a quiet strength that inspires everyone around her. In the chaos of production, Lisa is the steady anchor, always ready to lend a hand wherever it’s needed most. During “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” Lisa’s commitment knew no bounds. She transformed our lobby into a winter wonderland, dashed on prop runs, guided crew kids through their transitions, ensured actors hit their cues flawlessly, and orchestrated a memorable cast party—all with the grace of a true marvel. But it’s not just about the grand gestures; it’s the countless unseen moments that truly define Lisa’s impact. Washing dishes during rehearsals, arriving early, staying late—every action is a testament to her genuine heart and unwavering dedication to our cause. One poignant example stands out amidst the flurry of activity: our Stages Holiday Party. Despite having another commitment, Lisa arrived early to assist with setup, her signature hot chocolate in tow—a delight that became the talk of the event. And after her own obligations concluded, she returned to help clean up, selflessly giving her time when she could have easily taken her leave. Yet, these instances only scratch the surface of Lisa’s contributions. Behind the scenes, she’s the unsung hero, the silent force driving our success. Her impact ripples through every corner of the Lubbock Community Theatre and Stages Academy, touching lives in ways both big and small. Lisa Flake isn’t just a volunteer; she’s a beacon of kindness, a pillar of strength, and the embodiment of the spirit that defines our community. Her selfless acts may go unnoticed by many, but they leave an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to witness her unwavering generosity. In a world often plagued by indifference, Lisa’s compassion shines brightly, reminding us all of the profound difference one person can make.

Christina Riggs, Deer Park, TX

Susan Mele accepts the award for Christina Riggs at TEXFest 2024

Christina Riggs has been one of our most dedicated volunteers of the Art Park Players for the past 15 years. There aren’t too many productions that she does not serve backstage in some capacity such as props mistress, hair and make up, dresser, stage crew, and the list goes on and on. Not only is she great behind the scenes, but she heads up many of our fundraisers. One of the fundraisers that she is in charge of is our annual scholarship fundraiser. Christina spends countless hours enlisting volunteers and donations for our event which typically raises $20,000 to award to deserving seniors for scholarships and internships. Christina has many talents but one of the strongest talents she has is that she pays such close attention to detail and any actor can feel confident that she is going to do what needs to be done backstage to make the show the best that it can be. She is the type of volunteer that you can call at any hour of the day and ask for help or assistance, and she will be there – no questions asked. Her children were part of our youth program and they’ve all graduated. However, Christina says that the theatre is her home and will never leave. The hours that she spends volunteering are at a minimum 20 hours a week and she is invaluable to the success of the theatre. Christina is a treasured volunteer and we are so grateful for her presence.

Front of House Award

Whitney Garrison, Lubbock, TX

When you step into the Lubbock Community Theatre, Whitney Garrison isn’t just a face behind the box office; he’s the heartbeat of warmth that permeates every corner. For years, Whitney has been the silent orchestrator of smiles, the custodian of joy and the guardian of inclusivity. His presence is more than just administrative; it’s a beacon of light, a sanctuary of laughter in a world often dimmed by routine. Whitney isn’t merely a box office manager; he’s the curator of camaraderie, the conductor of comfort, ensuring that each visitor feels not just welcomed, but cherished. In the echo of his infectious laughter, the lobby transforms into a haven, where worries evaporate, and spirits lift. Whitney’s jokes aren’t just words; they’re stitches in the fabric of community, weaving bonds that endure beyond the final curtain call. Whitney’s dedication is the mortar that fortifies the foundation of the theatre, ensuring that every volunteer, every guest, feels not just attended to, but embraced. He doesn’t just maintain order; he nurtures it, tending to the House with a tender care that mirrors his affection for those who grace its halls. In Whitney, the spirit of the Lubbock Community Theatre finds its living embodiment. His commitment is a testament to the transformative power of passion, turning a simple box office into a gateway to belonging. And as patrons depart, their hearts a little lighter, their smiles a little brighter, they carry with them not just memories of a performance, but the indelible imprint of Whitney’s boundless kindness. For in the realm of theatre, where stories unfold and emotions intertwine, Whitney Garrison is more than a steward of tickets; he’s a guardian of the human connection, a reminder that, in a world often fractured by differences, there’s solace and strength in coming together under the same spotlight.

Jennifer Sheffield, Cove, TX

Jennifer Sheffield has truly been a remarkable asset to Stage Door Inc. Her involvement began when her daughter Avery joined our protege youth company and since then, she has been an invaluable member of our community. Jennifer’s dedication to our organization is unparalleled and her support extends to everyone involved. Not only has Jennifer been a pillar of support, but she has also actively contributed to our summer camps as an assistant director. Her expertise and guidance have greatly enhanced the experience for all participants. Moreover, Jennifer’s talent as a performer has graced multiple shows over the past four years, captivating audiences with her remarkable skills. In addition to her artistic contributions, Jennifer has played a pivotal role in implementing numerous innovative ideas that have helped us stay organized and focused on our mission. Her creativity and attention to detail have been instrumental in ensuring the smooth operation of our organization. It is no surprise that Jennifer’s exceptional qualities were recognized, as she was recently elected as the president of the board of directors. Her leadership and vision will undoubtedly guide us towards even greater success in the future. We are incredibly grateful for Jennifer Sheffield and the immense impact she has had on Stage Door Inc. Her unwavering dedication, support, and countless contributions have made her an irreplaceable part of our community. We look forward to continuing our journey together, inspired by her passion and commitment.

Mary Parrott, Deer Park, TX

Susan Mele accepted the award for Mary Parrott at TEXFest 2024.

Mary Parrot has been an active volunteer of the Art Park Players for the past 20 years. She began as a parent of one of our students and that is typically how volunteers begin. However, when her daughter graduated, Mary continued her involvement. Mary has headed up our hospitality crew for the past 15 years at the theatre for all of our adult shows, music revues, special performances, children’s shows, etc The only time she had to miss a production was when she had cancer and was undergoing a major surgery. However, even though she could not make the show, she still made sure that all of her volunteers had their assignments. Mary is not only dedicated to the theatre, but she loves Art Park Players. She serves in so many capacities with such joy and was recently named to our board of directors for Friends of the Art Park Players. She is a very present volunteer and takes much pride in all of her duties. There is not one volunteer opportunity that Mary is not involved with. She brings so much value with her dedication and passion to the Art Park Players. Mary is a tremendous asset and is loved by all of the Art Park Player family and our patrons.

Spotlight Award

Clinton Tegeler, Ganado, TX

Passion cannot be taught. One either possesses it or they do not. Work ethic cannot be taught. One either possesses it or they do not. Clinton Tegeler has a seemingly never-ending supply of both. As the founder of Townhall Players in Ganado, TX, Clinton has taken his lifelong love of theatre and created an environment where those in Jackson County and the surrounding areas can perform, learn and thrive and are limited by only their imaginations. His vision to promote theatre and create opportunities for all ages has impacted lives and fostered an appreciation for both live theatre and the arts in a small South Texas town. He did so by asking one simple question: Why the hell not? For eight (8) seasons, Clinton has filled the roles of administrator, technical director, lead carpenter, sound designer, lighting designer, performer, director, concessions manager and janitor. He DOES NOT, however, do costumes. After all, there are only so many hours in the day and running a theatre isn’t even his day job. Perhaps the biggest impact Clinton has had is in his dedication to providing opportunities for young people in his community. By nurturing and supporting the artistic efforts of the youth in Jackson County, he has guaranteed that the next generation of us crazy theatre folk will be prepared to keep theatre alive with passion and dedication. In short, what Clinton Tegeler has done and continues to do is the very definition of a lasting legacy.

George & Joyce Matthews, Victoria, TX

For over five decades, Joyce and George Matthews have been woven into the very fabric of our city’s cultural tapestry. Their unwavering dedication and boundless passion for the arts have enriched countless lives and nurtured an artistic ecosystem that thrives to this day. From the early 1970’s, their presence has graced numerous organizations – Theatre Victoria, Victoria Ballet Theatre, Victoria Symphony, the Fine Arts Association, Victoria Summer Repertory Musical Theatre and countless others. They have donned every conceivable artistic hat, from designing lights and managing sound to acting on stage, building sets, and mentoring young talents. Their impact transcends specific roles; they are living embodiment of the “show must go on” spirit, exemplified by George’s unwavering commitment even in the face of a mid-production heart attack! Joyce’s passing in 2019 left a void immense and impossible to fill. Yet, true to her indomitable spirit, George has stepped forward, carrying their shared legacy with unwavering grace. He continues to be a pillar of support, offering his time, expertise, and infectious enthusiasm to various organizations, even currently serving on the Fine Arts Association Board of Directors. While Joyce’s meticulous attention to detail and keen artistic eye are deeply missed, George carries the torch with the love and admiration of an entire city. He may not have her meticulously tabbed light cue book or her unwavering tape measure by his side, but he possesses something far more profound – the collective gratitude of a community he has helped shape. Their contributions are not simply measured in hours volunteered or projects completed; they are a testament to the transformative power of art, community, and unwavering dedication. We are honored to call them our own and believe they embody the very essence of the Community Theatre Spirit.

Keith Herrmann, Sugar Land, TX

Keith Herrmann personifies all things Theatre. He is involved with several theatres including ours within a 25 mile radius and is a very talented actor, director and choreographer. However, more than his love for being involved on stage and behind the scenes, Keith is a wonderful supporter financially for all of these theatres. Keith Herrmann serves as the Marketing Director and Event Coordinator for Landry’s Kemah location and Galveston location and never hesitates to make donations for auctions and for appreciation awards and even offers discount banquets and room spaces. And this is not a one time offer. Keith has been assisting us for over 10 years and his donations bring in several dollars to support our scholarship and internship funds at Art Park Players. He has been involved with Art Park Players, Pasadena Little Theatre, strand Street Theatre, east End Theatre. Clear Creek Community Theatre and he has even directed shows in a theatre venue at the Kemah Boardwalk, which is a tourist attraction in Texas. In addition, he supports almost every theatre in the Houston and surrounding areas in attending their productions and patron memberships. Keith’s presence is vital to the success of theatres in our area, and we are all grateful for his involvement personally and professionally.

Star Award

Patrick Ricci Jr., New Braunfels, TX

Robin Williams accepted the award for Patrick Ricci Jr. at TEXFest 2024.

Patrick Ricci has been a huge driving force of our theatre for more than 2 decades. He came to Circle Arts Theatre eager to be on stage, but also ready to do more. He quickly joined our board and became one of our most dependable assets. After our Founding Director/Board President passed away in 2008, he was willing to take on the daunting task of being our President and everyone happily said “not it” and voted for him to do it. He is still on the board, but has (once again) officially stepped down as President. During his reign, Patrick has spearheaded 4 major renovation projects: a complete renovation of our front of house/seating area, a complete renovation of backstage/dressing rooms, added restrooms and storage areas, plus most recently a complete stage remodel. Patrick has been just as much a part of the theatre as the staff has been for several years and this past year and a half stepped in even more than usual when our Executive Director passed. Although he may not be the head honcho anymore, we all still know Patrick is here for us. And we simply cannot thank him enough for all that he has done!

Bob and Rose Nichol, Deer Park, TX

Susan Mele accepted the award for Bob and Rose Nichol at TEXFest 2024.

There is not an award or recognition that Bob and Rose Nichol have not received or accomplished. They have been involved with the Art Park Players for the past 38 years and began when their children were in the program and have been steadfast volunteers ever since There is not one activity, one show, one festival, one fundraiser, etc. that Bob and Rose have not been involved in. They are two of the hardest working volunteers that we have and I wanted to recognize them for their contribution not only to Art Park Players but for their contribution to the TNT Youth conference in 2023. Bob and Rose helped load everything and set up at San Jacinto College and also assisted with the parties and then the takedown and clean up after the event. They also set up the concession stand and ran it the entire time with some assistance of wonderful volunteers from other theatres. Every theatre should be so fortunate to have a Bob and Rose Nichol serve as volunteers. They are incredible human beings and want to make sure that the best quality is put forward first and foremost. Bob runs the concession stand for all of our productions, and he has also served behind the scenes on the set crew and in the sound and light booths. Rose continues to do props for every production, assists with our summer camps and anything that is needed on a daily basis. There is no dollar amount that would be adequate for the service they provide our theatre. They have won literally every award that has been presented, and I think they are very deserving of any future awards that they may qualify for. We are so honored to have their volunteer service at our theatre. Art Park Players would not be the theatre it is without their dedication and presence.

Steadfast Support Award

San Jacinto College, Dr. Jerry Ivins, Pasadena, TX

San Jacinto College Central Campus provided all of their facilities and Tech crew for the 2023 Theatre Network of Texas, Inc. (TNT) Youth Conference at no cost to TNT. They were engaged and invested in our festival and gave support in so many capacities. The Director of San Jacinto College’s Theatre, Dr. Jerry Ivins, enlisted the assistance of his technical Director, Theatre staff and students to make sure that all needs were met and the festival ran smoothly without any issues. And, this is not the first time they have hosted a TNT Youth Conference. Dr. Jerry Ivins bought into what the mission is for TNT and he has made us aware that he and the San Jacinto College district would be more than happy to assist us with future conferences and festivals at no charge. They did an amazing job and in addition, we have created a wonderful partnership.

Onstage Award

David Arabie, Mount Belvieu, TX

David Eck accepts the Onstage Award for David Arabie at TEXFest 2024

David Arabie has quickly established himself as the guardian angel of our beloved theatre. His journey began a few years ago when he decided to get involved in our summer musical, “Addams Family,” so that he could share the magical experience with his daughter, AJ. Little did he know that this would be the start of an incredible theatrical adventure. Since that first show, David has been an integral part of every production that he deems suitable for his talents. With unwavering enthusiasm, he consistently shows up to auditions, radiating energy and a genuine eagerness for a good time. His infectious spirit uplifts everyone around him, creating an atmosphere of joy and excitement. David’s contributions to the shows he has been a part of are truly remarkable. He not only serves as a tremendous inspiration to the directing staff, cast, and crew, but he also leads by example. His dedication to memorization and his unwavering commitment to being a team player set the bar high for everyone involved. His presence on stage brings immense delight to the audience, leaving a lasting impression on all who witness his performances. However, David’s impact extends far beyond his on-stage presence. He is known for his encouraging messages, which he sends nightly after rehearsals or performances. These messages serve as a source of motivation and inspiration for everyone involved in the production. As a result, David has become a local celebrity in the eyes of our patrons and the children in our programming. His genuine care and support have made him the guardian angel of Stage Door Inc, and we consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have him as a cherished member of our theatre family.

Jordan Sanders, Lubbock, TX

Dennis Yslas accepts the Onstage Award for David Sanders at TEXFest 2024

Imagine the shimmering eyes of little girls, their imaginations dancing with visions of tiaras and ball gowns, dreaming of the day they might become princesses. For Jordan Sanders, that dream wasn’t just a fantasy; it was a reality she breathed life into with every step she took upon our stage. As she stepped into the iconic role of Belle in our production of “Beauty and the Beast,” she didn’t just meet expectations—she shattered them, elevating the art of performance to breathtaking heights. From the moment she graced the stage, Jordan embodied the essence of Belle with a grace and poise that seemed almost otherworldly. But it wasn’t just her physical presence that captivated; it was the ethereal quality of her voice that transported audiences to a realm of pure magic. As she sang the opening notes of “Belle,” it was as if time itself stood still, her voice weaving a tapestry of emotion that enveloped us all. But it was in the tender moments, the heart-wrenching ballads where Jordan truly showcased her prowess. During “Home,” the ache in her voice mirrored the longing in Belle’s heart, drawing us into her world of yearning and desire. And then, in “A Change in Me,” her voice soared to celestial heights, each note a testament to the transformative power of love. With every breath, every note, Jordan breathed life into Belle, infusing the character with a depth and nuance that left audiences spellbound. Her performance wasn’t just a portrayal; it was a revelation—a journey of heartache, hope, and ultimately, redemption. And the impact was palpable. Audiences were moved to tears, swept away by the raw emotion that emanated from the stage. Long after the final curtain fell, Jordan’s performance lingered in the air, a haunting melody that echoed in the hearts of all who bore witness. For Jordan Sanders, playing a princess wasn’t just about donning a costume or reciting lines; it was about embodying a dream, breathing life into a beloved character with a passion and authenticity that left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of watching. In her, we found a beacon of inspiration whose light will continue to shine long after the final bows have been taken.

Jeanmarie Eck, Houston, TX

Susan Mele accepts the Onstage Award for Jeanmarie Eck at TEXFest 2024

Jeanmarie is one of the most talented actresses that has graced the Art Park Player stage. She came to us from New York with a wealth of theatrical experience from professional venues, and is a tremendously gifted talent. Jeanmarie has been a wonderful support to our Theatre for the past 10 years even though she has a full-time career as a minister at a church in Houston, Texas. If we had an actress that couldn’t make a show, Jeanmarie would come and fill me in because she is just that good. She is a trie triple threat and has performed in several lead roles at Art Park Players in shows such as Sweeney Todd, Urinetown and Music Man which took place this past summer. During the production of Music Man, Jeanmarie’s mothers health was declining rapidly, and Jeanmarie was her primary caregiver. Not once did she miss a rehearsal and not once did she miss an opportunity to take care of her mother. Jeanmarie always made sure that all of her needs were met. With great sadness, her mother passed away during the run of our show and Jeanmarie with grace and dignity didn’t miss any performances. On an actual show date, she not only attended her mother’s funeral, but she performed her service as the minister of the church. The actors of the show and the audience members would have never known that she was dealing with such an incredible loss because she is a firm believer like all true theatre lovers of the stage are that the show must go on. Her dedication and love of her craft was not compromised and that is why I am nominating her for the Onstage award.

Ovation Award

David Hill, Blooming Grove, TX

What can I say about David Hill that many across the state of Texas do not already know and have not seen firsthand. To know him is to love him and to love him is to love theatre. He is the absolute essence of what “theatrefolks” can & should be. His spirit is truly infectious and his love for the craft is unmatched. I have had the immense pleasure of working with David for several years not only with the Theatre Network of Texas, Inc. (TNT) Board of Governors but with the TNT Youth Conference Commission. His dedication and commitment to that TNT crown jewel of events is staggering. I can say, firsthand, that he has definitely inspired the kids of my theatre to not only love the TNT Youth Conference but to love THEATRE in every way. While I can’t speak for other theatres and/or other directors, I think it is safe for me to say that David has served as an inspiration to their kids (and adults) too! He has become “The King of Social Climbing” (in a gooood way) as he puts himself out there with our young people with his annual Bingo Challenge and other fun happenings that occur in what we call “down time” at the Youth Conference. When our kids aren’t seeing shows, learning in workshops & master classes or in competitions, David can always be found in the midst of them keeping them active, having them mix & mingle and just showing a genuine love for them and what they do!

Corporate Arts Award

Community Auto Group, Baytown, TX

For many years Community Auto Group and its owners Roger and Kim Elswick have been steadfast supporters of the Baytown Little Theater. Since 2009, including capital campaign contributions, underwriting support for shows and special projects, and donating rehearsal space they have given well in excess of $120,000.00 to the BLT. Our current enviable financial status as a theatre can be directly attributed to their contributions. We are fortunate to have them as a stable and reliable partner helping us further our mission to keep quality, affordable theatre available to our market.

Normangee State Bank, Normangee, TX

Troupe Over The Hill has been supported by the Normangee State Bank since our beginning in 2008. The generosity of the bank has brought our organization to the forefront of businesses on Normangee’s Main Street. Knowing that our local bank is willing to support the cultural arts brings confidence to our organization when planning for the future. Troupe Over The Hill has been able to move forward from portable venues to now having a permanent location in Normangee, Texas, the Main Street Playhouse. Troupe Over The Hill is the only community theatre group in Leon County. It is a growing community theatre organization in the Brazos Valley. Normangee State Bank is a proud supporter of many charitable organizations in our community area. Their support to Troupe Over The Hill has grown significantly over the past fifteen years. The bank also supports the local school districts, sports teams, livestock sales, senior living center, newspaper, churches, and many other community organizations. The continued support they provide to organizations, such as Troupe Over The Hill, demonstrates their years of dedication and faithful contributions to the Normangee community and the surrounding area of the Brazos Valley. Normangee State Bank is a family owned bank that was chartered on October 12, 1912. The bank and their family have supported farms in the area and many families for over one hundred years. They will be expanding their operations on March 5, 2024, with another branch bank in Madisonville, Texas.
